Career Fairs: Why College Students Should Give Them a Shot

This week, I saw an advertisement on campus for an upcoming career fair my school will be hosting. Since I have no idea where my life is headed after graduation, I thought why not! Career fairs are something definitely worth checking out.

A career fair is a great place to get started because there are different companies looking to hire college graduates of all majors. They are taking time out of their day to get to know potential new employees. Who knows, the next one could be you!

Things to keep in mind for a career fair:

  • Bring multiple copies of your resume- you want to hand it out to all of the companies that interest you
  • Place your resume in a nice portfolio- the last thing you want is to hand out a wrinkled or stained resume (yikes!)
  • Dress professionally- first impressions are everything. This means knee length skirt/dress or slacks, a conservative top (girls, no cleavage!), and closed toe dress shoes.
  • Do your homework- Find out what companies will be at the career fair and then research the ones you are interested in meeting. This will give you the opportunity to prepare good questions to ask- it will make them see that you are really interested and will set you apart!
  • CONFIDENCE- sell yourself! Be poised, enthusiastic, and confident. Confidence is key.
Go to your school's Career Center to find out about any upcoming opportunities you could take advantage of! Are there any career fair tips you think would be helpful?

  1. See if they offer a list of companies that will be attending. It never hurts to have background knowledge of the company you are interested in.
